BACK SCHOOL

It's a soft activity that, when regularly practiced, it’s able to reduce the disease that has been distressing us as strong as ever since the last century: backache.

The first school was the Swedish one, that had been developed by a physiotherapist from Stockholm since 1969. It quickly replaced the older methodologies used on people who suffered from backache. It then became popular in Scandinavia, USA, Australia and then in the rest of Europe.

The modern back school (Of benedetto toso) condenses different schools and it is completed by the introduction of new doctrines and exercises such as kinesitherapy, functional rehab, Mézières method, Alexander method etc.

The key strength of Back school is that the person, suffering from back pains, becomes an active player of his/her treatment, through the practice of these exercises and the self management of his/her spine pain.

(see “Back School Neck School Bone School” – author: Benedetto Toso)

This activity is especially recommended to people who:

·         Suffer from lower back pain (Back School)

·         Suffer from neck pain (Neck school)

·         Want to prevent and treat osteoporosis

It can be also recommended if you have disc protrusions or bulges, vertebral compression, spinal stenosis, sciatica and low back pain, spondylolisthesis, painful scoliosis, lumbar hyperlordosis and kyphosis, ankylosing spondylitis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction. It’s useful also in case of whiplash injury or discectomy.

BACK SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS (6-13 YO)

“Students are often exposed to the same risk factors that workers face: they spend many hours sitting, like  employees, they rise and carry their backpack (that has become heavier and heavier) like workers who carry their loads.”

(“Back School- Neck School- Bone School” By Benedetto Toso)

RISK FACTORS:

·         Heavy backpacks.

·         Long time spent sitting and not enough activities that require movement and sport.

·         Insufficient suggestions on how to keep a correct posture and not enough ergonomic chairs.

·         Inadequate bed.

·         Anxiety status that leads to a kyphosis posture.

Purpose of Back School for students:

·         create awareness in parents and children of the risk factors related to a sedentary lifestyle and of the psychophysical benefits that can be achieved through a planned physical activity.

·         practice of postural rehab exercises in sitting position, to gain the habit to maintain the physiological curves of the spine.

·         practice the correct way to fill, lift and carry the backpack.
